n Belgium. Actually, this network is about 4 200 km long. The technical and administrative data for this network are given in a database which is used by various departments in the company. This database — which is spatial — plays a key role in the operation of the pipeline network. This means that a lot of importance is attached to the accuracy of the data. The 3-dimensional aspect of the database is mainly the result of topographical surveys. Fluxys mainly uses external surveyors to conduct these surveys. The tasks involving new and/or existing Fluxys' pipelines and substations may include: (a) terrestrial site survey and mapping of new and/or changed topography; (b) terrestrial site survey and mapping of new and/or changed topography vis-à-vis the existing topography; (c) terrestrial site survey and mapping of a new site profile; (d) terrestrial pipeline survey + accessories and
