In order to address long-term issues of flooding in Clonmel, the Office of Public Works (OPW) commissioned a study of the catchment area to develop sustainable options to address flood risk in the town and the surrounding areas. The overall flood defence scheme comprised of: • 3.8 km of flood walls • 3.5 km of embankments • 850 m of demountable defences • 5.9km of storm water sewers • 12 pumping stations • 2 fish passes • the replacement of three bridges • strengthening / widening of a further two Bridges. Work on the scheme was completed in 2013. As part of the construction of the flood defence scheme, there are a number of locations where demountable barriers are installed that are deployed during flood events.
